colour这个词解作“颜色”，这是大家都知道的了，但除了“颜色”之外，它还有别的意义，colour加上s构成复数后，除了解作“各种颜色”之外，它有时还具有和“颜色”毫不相干的意思，其一是在with flying colours这个成语中，作“军舰上的小旗”解。在今天要介绍的成语show one’s colours中，colours则解释为“本质、本性、真面目”，所以show one’s colours便为“暴露真面目”之意，但它并不总是用于贬义的，显露出原来不为人知的优良品格也同样可以用show one’s colours：
